Eating home cooked, whole foods and making family connections with daily family dinners were the norm in my house growing up. My mother made sure each of us was fueled with whole, real food so our bodies would stay healthy and meet the demands of our very busy lives. This held true until we could ride our bikes to the store and buy all the processed, packaged food that lined the shelves. I spent the next several years supplementing our homes nutritious meals with cookies, chips, and my all time favorite pretzels!!
My husband and I watched our weight creep up as our unhealthy eating habits continued and activity levels decreased. Our bodies were definitely letting us know these choices were not the path we should take. Once our children began to eat real food – I knew there was another way BUT, I had no idea where to begin! I realized I had to go back to the basics of my childhood and needed to find all the information I could on how to incorporate whole, healthy foods into our chaotic life. For the past 10 years, I have read and researched many different ways to nourish my family in a way that worked for us. A lot is trial and error, with the flexibility to realize we are ever changing. No one way of eating is right for all – it’s totally individual!
Our biggest challenge was finding balance in our days once the kids started various activities. We jumped on the treadmill at 100 miles an hour and quickly slid back into old habits of fast food and quick processed meals. One of our jobs as parents is to provide our children with a healthy foundation to grow into full functioning adults. Instilling proper eating and exercise habits from the beginning will greatly influence long term health and relationships with food. I needed that year of unhealthy choices to remind myself really what was important.
My husband and I (now our children too!) are long distance runners. We ask of our bodies to continually push harder and further every week. Eating the right foods for our bodies is crucial to staying healthy and reducing risk of injury. Providing self care for ourselves not only creates balance in our days but also decreases the stress that work and life put on us. Whatever your exercise of choice is, when you crowd out the processed, packaged foods you too will see how your body will perform better.
I received my training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. Drawing on this knowledge, I will help you create a completely personalized “roadmap to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.
In addition to being a Health Coach, I am also a Registered Dental Hygienist. I have been blessed to work in an amazing office for almost 20 years and have in essence grown up with my patients. Besides my family, my patients are what inspired me to continue on with school. I have watched the lists of medications people take get longer and longer over the years. Most people don’t know there is a way to avoid this or the ability to change it. I am committed to inspiring as many people as I can to create life long changes for healthier, happier, and balanced lives.
